Papa Robbie's Music Palace

Duppies, Jumbies, and Vibes

Various Artists Season 9 Episode 15

This episode features some of my favorite songs from the islands about paranormal activity, monsters, vampires (literal and metaphorical), thrilling stories, mixed with some comedy, shenanigans and vibes.

Some examples:

"Last Night The Landlord Nearly Killed Me" by Lord Cristo isn't about monsters or evil spirits, but a "scary" situation involving Cristo's "activities" which almost sent him to the undertaker. :-)

"Back To Back" (Jumbie Jamboree) by calypsonian "The Charmer" is a song about a bunch of malevolent spirits who were partying in a cemetery singing "back to back, belly to belly...Ah don't care a damn, Ah done dead already..."
FYI "The Charmer" later became known as Minister Louis Farrakhan. :-)

“Mr. Brown”  by The Wailers is based on a popular Jamaican ghost story about a three-wheeled coffin rolling through town.
The story goes that three buzzards were perched on top of the coffin, and one of them could talk and was asking for a Mr. Brown.

"Duppy Conqueror" is a song by The Wailers that refers to a malevolent spirit in Jamaican folklore:
        •       Duppy: A malevolent spirit or ghost in Jamaican folklore. In Caribbean folklore, duppies are often considered to be malevolent spirits that cause trouble for humans.
        •       Conqueror: A strong person who can buck bulls and knock them out.

A jumbie is a malevolent spirit or demon in the folklore of some Caribbean countries. The term is used to describe a variety of creatures, including:
Soucouyant, Lagahoo, Douen, La Diabless, Papa Bois, and Mama D'Leau.
Jumbies are often depicted as dark shadowy figures.
