Dancehall Icon: TIGER
We're diving into the jungle with one of dancehall's wildest and most innovative artists: Tiger. Born Norman Washington Jackson in Kingston, Tiger first emerged in the late 70s and became a major star in the 80s, known for his unique, gruff "multi-voiced and totally deranged" style. He was one of the first dancehall artists to make waves in the U.S. hip-hop scene and even had a hit on the Cool Runnings movie soundtrack.
Jackson was born in Kingston, Jamaica on June 6, 1960. He first recorded as a singer under the name Ranking Tiger.
In January 1994, Jackson was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident. He suffered serious head injuries and his recovery was slow, and the injury affected his voice to the point where he was no longer able to record or perform to his previous capacity.
From his iconic growl to his crossover collaborations, Tiger’s raw energy left an undeniable paw print on the genre. Stay with us as we celebrate the dynamic career of the one-and-only Tiger. This is only a snapshot of his vast output. If this doesn't make you tap your feet or at least move SOMETHING, someone should check your pulse.
